The Danish Nature Agency owns Fodsporet and worked in cooperation with Næstved and Slagelse municipalities on the design and construction of the facilities. The municipalities are responsible for operation.

The Nordea Foundation contributed DKK 36 million to the project, which enabled it to go ahead. The Danish Nature Agency and the municipalities of Næstved and Slagelse contributed a further DKK 12 million.
Citizens and organisations were involved in the planning and design of the trail and the type of facilities along the trail.
