Sloe

The first frost means that we can pick sloes to make schnapps or juice.
The sloe is a wild plum of a misty blue-black colour. The fruit ripen during the autumn but are very bitter until the frost has had the effect of stimulating the fruit's sugar content. Plenty of birds - particularly thrushes - also enjoy the sloe.
